GARISSA MUNICIPAL TORCHED HOUSES - nfdonline GSA
Land in Garissa has been a problem ever since territorial curving started, which led to deaths and bad blood between neighbours.
Garissa Municipal is known for its ruthless and harsh actions when it comes to land, in the past week the local county has been busy torching thatched houses built by squatters at Quba mosque area.

The recent actions of the municipal council, does rings a bell, remembering in the late 1980s when the local council burnt many buildings near garissa animal market. At the time, the victims use to claim to be innocent who were victimized and subjected to ill-treatment, others lamented the local government was siding with individuals. As bystanders all agreed with grieving homeless, those days the reality was KANU the only political party empowered few over the majority and imbalance was pretty practiced. |
Today the picture in the municipal is very different, at the Garissa Town Hall the mayor is ODM, also there are local councilors from various parties elected by the locals to represent their interest, but still some resident whose houses were flamed argue the officers who torched the houses were not ordered to destroy properties.
“The municipal lately discussed the issue of land and approved to deal with it in a reasonable manner but what is happening can raise questions within the municipal” by Mr Andufyare an ODM councilor.
As usual victims can blame authorities from all angles; an angry man who lost his Mundul said “those currently in the municipal are the same old guys”. “Due to 2007 General Elections mayhem, Garissa has became a behave for new settlers, families moving from down Kenya due to the political clashes that nearly put Kenya into civil war. These new arrivals got the money power and they need land to own, therefore the local government is trying to accommodate them with our land”.
